In a momentous announcement, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has revealed their men’s squad for the upcoming T20 International series against England, featuring the highly anticipated return of star all-rounder Andre Russell. The explosive cricketer is set to make a comeback to the national side after a two-year hiatus, adding significant firepower to the West Indies lineup.

Russell, known for his dynamic batting and impactful bowling, last represented the West Indies in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. His return for the England series is expected to bolster the team’s strength and provide valuable experience, particularly in the T20 format where his aggressive style has made him a fan favourite.

The West Indies squad, led by Rovman Powell and Shai Hope named as vice-captain, comprises a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising young talents. Alongside Russell, the squad includes established players such as Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers as well as young all-rounder Matthew Forde, who shined in his ODI debut in the final game against England.

The selectors have also recalled Sherfane Rutherford, who hasn’t played a T20I since January 2020.

In a press statement, West Indies selector Desmond Haynes said: “This will be the final home T20I series for the West Indies in 2023, as they prepare to be one of the two host teams for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June 2024.”

“We have selected a squad that we think gives us the best chance of success in that tournament. We will continue to assess in the lead up to the competition,”
he added.

The series against England holds importance for both teams as they fine-tune their preparations ahead of major T20 tournaments. The West Indies will look to build momentum and test their combinations, while England aims to put forth a strong performance in the challenging conditions of the Caribbean.

The T20 series is scheduled to commence on December 12, with the first match taking place at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
