A bizarre turn of incidents during Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka game
The incident occurred in the 25th over of the Sri Lankan innings when Mathews was preparing to bat after Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, who scored 41 runs off 42 balls. Initially, Mathews took some time to step onto the field and then further postponed his commencement due to a broken strip of his helmet.
As a result, the on-field umpires made the groundbreaking decision to declare Mathews ‘timed out’ as per the rules of the game.
The MCC rule on ‘time-out’
“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,” states the MCC rulebook.

This ruling has sparked discussions within the cricketing community, as ‘timed out’ dismissals are rare and uncommon in international cricket. The decision has brought attention to the importance of players adhering to the time restrictions set by the game’s regulations, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with the rules to maintain the integrity and flow of the match.
