Jonny Bairstow hits back at critics after a blistering knock in 4th Ashes Test
England’s wicketkeeper-batter, Jonny Bairstow, delivered a stunning response to his critics with an unbeaten knock of 99 runs in the ongoing fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Bairstow, who had been under intense scrutiny for his wicketkeeping and batting performances, made a resounding statement with his extraordinary display on Day 3 of the Test match.

Throughout the series, Bairstow’s wicketkeeping skills had been the subject of much debate, as he struggled to hold on to crucial catches, proving costly for the home side. Additionally, his batting form had been lackluster, averaging just 27.20 in five innings across the first three Tests. The pressure on the Yorkshireman escalated after a controversial stumping in the second Ashes Test, where he was dismissed by Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

However, when it mattered the most, Bairstow silenced his critics with a stunning performance at Old Trafford. He not only showcased his prowess with the gloves by taking an exceptional catch but also exhibited his batting prowess with an explosive innings. His unbeaten 99 played a pivotal role in England amassing a colossal total of 592 all out, putting the team in a commanding position in the Test.

Unfazed by the negative comments surrounding his form, Bairstow addressed the criticism in a post-match interview with Sky Cricket, saying, “People can say what they want. They are paid to give their opinion. If they don’t have an opinion, they don’t have a job. We’ve done everything so far in the game. To get four wickets tonight puts them under pressure.”

Bairstow’s heroic knock not only showcased his batting prowess but also revealed his ability to perform under pressure. As wickets fell around him, he remained composed and took charge, adopting an aggressive approach that thrilled the raucous Old Trafford crowd.

“I’ve been happy. There have been a couple of interesting dismissals. It is only a couple of games ago that I got a 70-odd. It is what it is. I want to go out and enjoy and entertain. I can leave them to their comments, and I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing,” added Bairstow.

As Day 3 concluded, Australia found themselves trailing by 162 runs with six wickets in hand, facing an uphill battle to salvage the Test match.
