The incident happened when the pair were speaking on Sky Sports‘ broadcast during the lunch break on day four of the first Ashes Test. At that point, England were looking comfortable at 155/5 with a lead of 162 in hand. Joe Root single-handedly bolstered England’s score in the first session. He played a counter-attacking knock of 46 before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon. However, Root’s impressive batting caught Pietersen’s attention, particularly the 32-year-old’s execution of reverse ramps and unorthodox shots.
Pietersen praised Root’s approach and his ability to put pressure back on the Aussies.
“Joe Root just owned the game. He ran the game, he was pure quality and he just owned that space. All of this lot (Australian players) were just scratching their heads going ‘what do we do?’,” Pietersen said.
Nevertheless, Ponting had a quick response to shut down Pietersen and reminded everyone of his own prowess.
“Well he’s out now, he got 40,” the ex-Australian captain said bluntly.
