Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins recently shared his thoughts on potential involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the prospect of continuing as the ODI captain after the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins talks about IPL 2024 prospects

With an eye on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, Cummins acknowledged a dip in his form in the shortest format of the game. To make a strong case for his inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad, he announced his intention to enter his name for the IPL 2024 auction. The decision comes after Cummins withdrew from the IPL 2023 season due to a busy schedule involving the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Ashes. He last played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the cash-rich league.

“I feel like I haven’t played a heap of T20 cricket and in some ways I feel like I haven’t played my best T20 cricket for a little while. I’m really excited, I’m probably going to go into the IPL auction for next year to try to get some games before that World Cup and push a case to not only make the side but get back to how I feel like I can bowl in T20 cricket,” Cummins was quoted as saying by the Times of India

Considering ODI captaincy beyond the World Cup

As the current leader of the Australian team in the quadrennial event, Cummins recognizes the challenges of balancing the workload as a fast bowler and captaining the side in two demanding formats. Addressing his future plans, Cummins expressed openness to continuing as the ODI captain after the World Cup.

“Potentially, yeah. We’ll chat about it. We’ve been pretty open, me and Andrew and George around different times in the year you’re going to have different priorities. After here, the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while. Probably like we’ve done in the past, at times white-ball cricket is going to have to shift, so we fully focus on Test cricket. So yeah, there’s no end date in sight. I feel like I’ve been managed really well and looked after, albeit in a really, really busy year where you don’t really give up any cricket,” the 30-year-old concluded.

Semifinal clash against South Africa

Australia are set to clash with South Africa in the second semi-final at the Eden Gardens on Thursday, November 16. A successful campaign in the CWC 2023 would add another significant accomplishment to Cummins’ captaincy after successfully leading Australia to the World Test Championship (WTC) title this year.
