Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday announced the replacement of Russell Domingo for the position of the new head coach.

Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Chandika Hathurusingha will return to coach the Bangladesh men’s team for a two-year period. He is expected to join the set-up in February.

The 57-year-old has previously worked as the head coach for the Tigers between 2014 and 2017. He will replace Domingo at the helm as the latter resigned from his post in December 2022.

On joining Bangladesh again, Hathurusingha said in his official statement: “It’s an honour to have been given this opportunity to coach the Bangladesh national team once again.

“I really loved the warmth of the people and the culture of Bangladesh whenever I have been there. I’m looking forward to working with the players once again and enjoy their successes.”

BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury welcomed back the new head coach. “Chandika’s experience and knowledge of Bangladesh cricket will be an advantage for him and will benefit the players. He is a proven tactician and we have seen his impact on the national team during his first assignment.”

Hathurusingha’s immediate priority will be the 50-overs format as the ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in India this year. Under his coaching, the Bangladesh team previously reached to the knockout stages of ICC events at the ODI World Cup in 2015 and the Champions Trophy in 2017.
