Daily Kos was born on May 26, 2002. That makes 2022 our 20th anniversary year, and just one of the ways we’re celebrating is by bringing back the Koscars! One of the things that makes Daily Kos special is our open platform, where community members can publish stories alongside staff. The Koscars seek to acknowledge and honor outstanding writing contributions from everyone. The entire Daily Kos membership is “the Academy,” so your votes decide the winners.

Before we can get to voting—a beloved Daily Kos activity, indeed—we need nominees. This week, we are requesting nominations for Outstanding Daily Kos Group. Is there a Group whose posts you eagerly await every day or every week? Nominate it now!

On to this week’s category!

Outstanding dAILY KOS GROUP

The affinity and activism Groups at Daily Kos have been a great way for us to share common interests and passions. These virtual gatherings are the beating heart of the Daily Kos Community, connecting us and letting us get to know each other on a more authentic level. Alliances and friendships built in these groups are frequently taken offline into local meetups, reunions at Netroots Nation, attending demonstrations together, working on campaigns, and other soul-nourishing real-world relationships.

In this category, the Koscar goes to the Group name as a whole. Groups with multiple nominations have a better chance of making it into the final list of nominees. This link to a list of Daily Kos groups may jog your memory, or may overwhelm you with the sheer number of groups available! It can be sorted by group name, more recently created, or most recent posting.

What Group do you participate in most regularly? What Group do you participate in with the most enthusiasm? Nominate it today!

Nominations will be open as long as this story is accepting comments. You can nominate any Group on Daily Kos, whether or not it is still active, and whether you belong to it or not. Don't be shy: You can even nominate a Group you created.

Finalists in all categories will be presented on Tuesday, May 17, when the voting begins! Two winners in each category will be announced on our 20th anniversary—Thursday, May 26!

Foreign and domestic events being what they are, a project like this can be a welcome distraction from talk of war, Supreme Court controversy, and general anxiety over the upcoming midterm elections. Let’s celebrate the best of who we are, the best of what we have to offer, and the best of what we have done to effect progressive change.

here's how YOU can participate in the Koscars:

  • Be on the lookout for the nomination request each week.

  • Read, recommend, and comment so it will stay visible on the Trending List as long as possible.

  • Make nominations in each category, including seconding nominations made by others (where applicable).

  • Vote when the final list of nominees is presented on Tuesday, May 17.

  • Congratulate the Koscar winners on our 20th anniversary—Thursday, May 26!

last call for category #3: OUTSTANDING STORY BY A DOWNBALLOT CANDIDATE

You have one more day to offer nominations in Category #3: Outstanding Story by a Downballot Candidate.

Over the years Daily Kos has seen countless stories posted by candidates who grabbed our hearts (and our donations) with great stories telling us the reasons they decided to run for office. We’ve heard from Democrats in ruby red areas who filed their candidacies just to make sure Republicans didn’t run unopposed; parents who offered themselves for school board because they got fed up with conservative voices getting all the media attention; young adults who decided to follow in the footsteps of their mentors and make sure there was at least one voice making the progressive argument in their district. Does any particular candidate come to mind as you read that? Nominate that story today!
