Connect! Unite! Act! is a weekly series that seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups meet regularly to socialize, get out the vote, support candidates, and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers that be. Visit us every week to see how you can get involved!

Heroes are a strange thing in literature and our culture. Stories that begin with “Once upon a time” have flawless heroes who represent truth and justice. Currently, many “heroes” we see presented on television and the movie screen are flawed heroes who try to overcome their faults, to be better than they are, and in the end, to save humanity or protect their families. As examples: the Marvel Universe, DC Universe, big-screen action films, and television productions. A hero is not the protagonist, the person you follow through a story; a hero is a role model or ideal you see in a story. There are numerous stories where the hero is not necessarily the protagonist, and some authors—like Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore, Neil Gaiman—have played around with this structure. That doesn’t mean we are short of real-world heroes. It just means heroes look different from those who fly around in capes or use their inherited billions to build batmobiles and weapons companies.

Sappho in ancient times summed up what it meant to be a hero:

He is more than a hero he is a god in my eyes— the man who is allowed to sit beside you —

Peter Gabriel did so much more recently, covering the David Bowie song Heroes.

Everyone has a hero. It can be a friend, family member, singer, poet, writer, a character in a book or a play that you wish you could be. There is a natural desire to find heroes.

Who are your heroes?

Our Connect! Unite! Act! team is here to provide support and guidance to new and existing volunteer leaders of each regional and state group, helping them recruit, organize, and execute social and action events. We invite you to join in this effort to build our community. There are many ways to pitch in. If there isn't a group to join near you, please start one.
