In an intriguing turn of events, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has offered his perspective on India’s upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 encounter against Afghanistan, scheduled for Wednesday (October 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Sehwag, renowned for his candid cricketing insights, suggested that India should consider resting veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for this pivotal match.

Ashwin, who made a remarkable entry into the World Cup after Axar Patel‘s injury setback, played a pivotal role in India’s tournament opener against Australia in Chennai. The 37-year-old bowled a commendable spell, conceding a mere 34 runs in his 10 overs and crucially scalping the wicket of Australian batter Cameron Green.

Virender Sehwag advocates rest for Ravichandran Ashwin in crucial World Cup clash

Sehwag’s viewpoint stems from a multifaceted analysis. Firstly, the 44-year-old emphasizes the significance of preserving Ashwin, especially considering his age and the taxing nature of the CWC 2023. This strategic rest could optimize Ashwin’s fitness and form for high-stakes encounters ahead.

Secondly, Sehwag highlights the specific pitch conditions in Delhi. The Najafgarh-born cricketer suggests that these conditions may not be conducive to spin bowling, rendering Ashwin’s inclusion less advantageous. Instead, he posits that selecting Mohammed Shami could provide a more versatile and effective bowling option on the day.

“I think Ravichandran Ashwin will be rested. Mohammed Shami has been in wonderful form, and he even took a fifer against Australia. This is a different wicket, and the ground is also smaller. Also, there is the age factor with Ashwin. So, India will look to save him for the big matches,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by the Cricbuzz.

Despite Ashwin’s noteworthy showing against Australia, Sehwag’s suggestion seems to be part of a more comprehensive strategy, focusing on managing player workloads and a thorough assessment of pitch conditions. As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates this critical clash, all eyes will be on India’s selection choices.
