Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved a remarkable milestone in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers, becoming only the second player in history to register three consecutive five-wicket hauls. The legendary Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis is the only other cricketer to have accomplished this feat.

Hasaranga’s exceptional performance with the ball has been instrumental in Sri Lanka’s campaign. In his last three ODIs, he has scalped an impressive total of 16 wickets. His recent exploits include a magnificent six-wicket haul against the UAE, followed by five-wicket hauls against Oman and Ireland.

The talented spinner’s contribution has played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s strong position in the qualifiers, placing them on the path to secure a spot in the highly anticipated 2023 ODI World Cup, schedule to be played in India in October and November.

Although Hasaranga’s bowling figures were exceptional in the matches against the UAE and Oman, he faced some challenges against Ireland. In that particular encounter, he conceded 79 runs while taking five wickets in his allotted 10 overs.

Following their comprehensive 133-run defeat against Sri Lanka, Ireland’s hopes of advancing to the Super Six stage have been dashed.

Hasaranga’s consistent and remarkable performances have undoubtedly established him as a key player for Sri Lanka in their quest to qualify for the upcoming ODI World Cup. His exceptional ability to take crucial wickets will be pivotal for his team’s success as they continue their campaign in the qualifiers.

The Islanders will next take on the unbeatable Scotland side in their last Group B fixture at Bulawayo on Tuesday, June 27.
