The best antidote for hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,390 registered voters was conducted online from Jan. 22-25 and reveals that 51% of Americans think right-wing militias like the Oath Keepers pose a threat to the U.S. government (41% significant, 10% somewhat). Just 35% of Americans do not think these groups are a threat.

While most Americans see right-wing militias as dangerous, concern about groups like the Oath Keepers breaks strongly across party lines. While 41% of all Americans think right-wing militias are a significant threat, only 4% of Republicans believe this; 67% of Republicans think right-wing militias are not a threat to the U.S. government.

Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:

  • Most Americans (51%) think politicians should say whether or not they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • 54% approve of the Biden administration’s plan to distribute free N95 masks at pharmacies and community centers; 5% believe the plan doesn’t go far enough.
  • 51% approve of the Biden administration’s plan to send four free COVID-19 tests to households that request them; 9% believe this doesn’t go far enough.
  • A plurality (48%) of Americans support eliminating the Senate filibuster (35%) or significantly reforming it (13%).
    • Another 43% of Americans—mainly Republicans—want to keep the Senate filibuster as is.

Additional issues surveyed include the local school boards removing books from classrooms and libraries; COVID-19 vaccination; support for President Biden and former President Trump; and viewership of Fox News, Newsmax, One American News Network, and MSNBC.

This poll’s results highlight Americans’ understanding of the major threat posed by right-wing militias—a threat they clearly demonstrated in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
