Hello again Daily Kos Community, and welcome back to Daily Kos Week in Action, a new series from the Daily Kos Activism team! Each week, we’ll check in to share the issues we’re working on, and get feedback on where you think we should focus our future efforts.
This week, we are fighting to extend the Child Tax Credit and expand the Supreme Court. We are also promoting antitrust legislation against Big Tech conglomerates, and challenging roadblocks against the Equal Rights Amendment. Let’s take a look!
Extending the Child Tax Credit
Joe Manchin—a name we all wish we could delete from our collective political lexicon—is yet again impeding progress like a stranded barge blocking the supply chain. This time, the (barely) Democratic senator is determined to prevent help from reaching children living in poverty—fun!
Manchin’s latest concern about the Build Back Better Act is the Child Tax Credit. The popular measure has significantly reduced poverty and food insecurity rates in children, particularly in his home turf of West Virginia, and expires this month. Manchin’s specific and sudden concerns are centered around the cost of the life-changing relief. Ironically, the coal baron didn’t have those same concerns earlier this week, when the Senate passed a defense bill that provides more money than President Joe Biden asked for, despite no plan for how the defense bill would be paid for in the long-term. Sadly, it seems weapons are more important than children to certain members of Congress these days.
To fight Manchin’s hypocrisy, we’ve launched a campaign to highlight the Child Tax Credit and raise awareness on the need to both expand and continue it.
If you’d like to help us fight back, you can take these actions today:
Expanding the Supreme Court
The GOP’s stolen Supreme Court is on a tear, gutting our democracy and freedoms. This past year alone, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act (again), effectively overturned Roe v. Wade in Texas, blocked President Biden’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium, reinstated ex-President TV Personality’s cruel “Remain in Mexico” policy, curtailed workers’ rights to organize, and eroded government transparency by ruling in favor of a Koch-backed dark money group.
Biden launched a commission to probe arguments for and against expanding the Supreme Court, but its report downplays the threat posed by the current group of justices, uncritically repeats right-wing messaging, and fails to advocate for the reforms necessary to save our democracy. That’s why Daily Kos supports the Judiciary Act of 2021, which would add four new seats to the Court.
If you’d like to show your support for expanding the Supreme Court, this action is for you:
Big Tech is Crushing Competitors
If the tech industry is like high school, then it has created four mean girls—Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google—and enabled them to gain power and lord their influence over the rest of a student body left crawling for crumbs in their wake. From the information we see to the brands we buy, just a handful of unelected corporate executives have too much power over every facet of American life—and it's getting worse. These Big Tech behemoths are using their massive power to exploit and disregard workers, small businesses, and the health and security of low-income, frontline communities of color.
Daily Kos has partnered with Demand Progress and the Athena Coalition to combat Big Tech monopolies. We’re amplifying Athena's long-running campaign to promote antitrust legislation in the industry, and together, we’ve generated 14,483 letters to members of the House so far. With the recent confirmation of Jonathan Kanter as Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, we hope antitrust laws are making a much-needed comeback.
Help us rein in Big Tech now:
Are Only Men Created Equal?
You’d think that guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens, regardless of gender, and ending the legal distinctions between genders when it comes to matters of divorce, employment, property, and more wouldn’t be a controversial issue, but in the United States, it is. Thirty-eight states have ratified the Equal Rights Amendment thus far, fulfilling requirements for it to become the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But because of a 2020 Bill Barr memo, the ERA hasn’t yet become part of the Constitution.
With our partners, Daily Kos is calling on the Biden Administration to immediately remove roadblocks to the ERA put in place by the Trump administration, and ensure that the foundations and freedoms of our democracy apply equally to people of any and all genders.
