Warner has already served as the captain of the Hyderabad-based franchise, leading them to their first and only IPL title in 2016. However, his captaincy was taken away midway through the 2020 season, and he was not even included in all matches during the 2021 season. Despite this, Warner is a proven match-winner, and his leadership abilities have been widely acknowledged by his peers and cricket experts alike.
The Capitals bought him for INR 6.25 crore at the last year’s auction, bringing him back to the team where he started his IPL career when they were known as Delhi Daredevils. The team management believes that Warner’s experience and expertise will help DC perform well in the IPL 2023 season and possibly win the championship.
Reacting to his appointment as DC captain, Warner in his statement said: “Rishabh has been a terrific leader for Delhi Capitals, and we’re all going to miss having him around. I would like to thank the management for the faith and trust they’ve always shown in me. This franchise has always been home for me, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead such a supremely talented bunch of players. I can’t wait to meet them all, and get cracking!”
In another major announcement, India all-rounder Axar Patel has been promoted to the mantle of vice-captaincy, his first leadership role in the IPL.
