'De-Nazifying' Russian troops desecrate a second Holocaust memorial

No wonder Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are best friends. No amount of gaslighting or tragic irony can trigger shame in either of them. The rampaging, “de-Nazifying” Russian army, which has spectacularly failed in its urgent campaign to capture—and likely torture—Ukraine’s Jewish president, has now damaged a second Ukrainian Holocaust memorial, this one near Kharkiv.

According to Ukraine’s ministry of defense, Russians have hit Drobytsky Yar, a memorial dedicated to 15,000 Jews who were shot or forced into mass graves by Nazis during World War II.

"The Nazis have returned. Exactly 80 years later," the ministry posted on Twitter on Saturday with a photograph of the memorial’s damaged menorah. NBC News could not independently verify the photo.

Earlier this month, Zelenskyy—who is Jewish and said three of his family members died in World War II—invoked the barbarism of the Holocaust when Russian forces hit a television tower next to Babi Yar, a memorial site where Nazis massacred an estimated 33,000 Jews in 1941.

Wait, by “de-Nazifying,” did Putin mean erasing any evidence that the Nazis were ever in Ukraine? Or does he just want to supplant faint memories of Nazi atrocities with all-new ones starring Russia and its bumblefuck blitz?

Russia’s campaign is fucked, and at this point, its soldiers should just slink away with their tails between their legs. Unfortunately, Putin is running this show, and he seems just as reluctant as Trump to acknowledge a clear, personally embarrassing loss. So he’ll continue wreaking unnecessary havoc to protect his fragile ego. This is the sort of clusterfuck you get when men who love money and power in equal measure get to decide the fates of millions of other real human beings. For all intents and purposes, both Putin and Trump are solipsists. Even if they occasionally acknowledge the objective existence of other sentient beings, they remain unmoved by their pain.

Putin will remain untroubled by his hypocrisy, of course. But it will continue to galvanize the rest of the world’s population, the vast majority of whom are still decent human beings. And the glimmer of humanity that shines through Russia’s dark brutality is one big reason why, in the end, Putin can’t—and won’t—win.

It made comedian Sarah Silverman say, “THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT,” and prompted author Stephen King to shout “Pulitzer Prize!!!” (on Twitter, that is). What is it?
