T20 World Cup 2024 selection debate
The inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Kohli in India’s squad for the upcoming T20I mega event in 2024 has sparked intense discussions within the cricketing fraternity. The experienced duo hasn’t featured in T20Is since India’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals, and opinions vary on whether they should be part of the upcoming campaign.
Priority to youngsters over experience
Following India’s loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, speculation about the T20 World Cup squad has intensified. While some advocate for a youthful team, others argue that Rohit and Kohli still possess valuable contributions to make in the shortest format.

Faf du Plessis weighs in on Virat Kohli’s T20 World Cup prospects
The Former South Africa captain now shared his perspective with NDTV Sports, expressing confidence that Kohli will be included in India’s T20I squad for the global showpiece event. Du Plessis who knows Kohli well, believed the former Indian captain wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to compete for the coveted trophy. Additionally, he mentioned Rohit’s eagerness to participate in the mega event.
“Yeah, I think so. Certainly, if you look at the staging right now. The T20 World Cup is not far away. So it feels like everything in the reach. If you talk about the next 50-over World Cup, that’s where players will go ‘that’s too far away’ and maybe that’s something I don’t see them playing that,” Du Plessis said.
“But knowing Virat very well, he wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity of the T20 World Cup, to get the trophy. That’s why we play the game, he was so close this time around. Rohit would be no different, I thought they both were excellent at home and they would want to make sure that they are geared up,” the Pretoria-born cricketer concluded.
Final decision rests with BCCI
It’s worth noting that both Rohit and Kohli were rested for the T20I series against Australia and will sit out the white-ball segment of the upcoming South Africa tour. The final decision rests with the BCCI, shaping the future course of the dynamic duo’s T20 international careers.
