On Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray told the House committee investigating the attempted assassination of Donald Trump that it was not clear whether Trump was hit by a bullet or shrapnel.

During an exchange with the committee’s chair, Jim Jordan, Wray explained that accounting for all of the bullets fired during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was not information he had on hand.

“With respect to former President [Donald] Trump, there's some question about whether or not it's a bullet or shrapnel that, you know, that hit his ear,” Wray said, alluding to Trump’s claims it was indeed a bullet.

After Wray’s testimony, Newsweek—not the most liberal of news outlets—ran the headline "Donald Trump Might Not Have Been Shot After All." And Donald Trump Jr. reposted an image of the article to his X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:

This is really covering some ground, but [Newsweek] might be the most embarrassing "news organization" in the entire country. They constantly publish BS, but this is next level Trump derangement. They should be ashamed of themselves!!!

However, the only official evidence that Trump was hit by a bullet comes from a memo written by Rep. Ronny Jackson. Jackson, a MAGA acolyte, was not the attending physician at the time of the attempt on Trump’s life, and according to the Washington Post, Jackson is only “authorized to practice in a military facility.”

On Thursday, House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to questions about Wray's testimony, saying, “We've all seen the video, we've seen the analysis, we've heard it from multiple sources in different angles that a bullet went through his ear. I'm not sure it matters that much."

He also attacked Wray, saying his testimony was “apparently inaccurate and he was not forthcoming with some of the information that we would expect. There's a lot of frustration and concern about the leadership with these agencies.”

Trump appointed Wray in 2017 to replace former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump abruptly fired amid an investigation into whether Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russian government.
