An unfortunate incident occurred at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday (August 10) as the ground caught fire during ongoing renovation work in preparation for the much-anticipated ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The fire originated in the dressing room area of the stadium, where the equipment and belongings of cricketers were stored. However, the fire department’s swift response helped control the situation and prevented any major damage.

The fire was first noticed by the ground staff and workers on site, after which they immediately called for help from the fire department. The quick action from the firefighters and the deployment of two fire engines eventually helped contain the blaze within an hour.

What caused the unfortunate incident:

As per the reports, the fire emanated from the false ceiling of the dressing room, where cricketing gear and personal items of players were stored. Although the extent of the damage was relatively limited, a few personal belongings of some players in that area unfortunately succumbed to the flames. Initial speculations suggest fire to have erupted due to a short circuit.

Notably, the incident took place after the venue had recently undergone inspection by delegations from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Eden Garden’s important role in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023:

The unfortunate event has now become a major talking point among cricket enthusiasts as the Eden Gardens stadium is slated to host a series of pivotal matches in the upcoming ODI World Cup, including the high-profile clash between India and South Africa on November 5, as well as the second semi-final match on November 16. Overall, the venue will witness six matches during the course of the mega ICC tournament.
