Former cricketer reveals how Pakistan team was scared of Tendulkar​

Former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali recently revealed the immense respect and fear that Tendulkar commanded within the Pakistan dressing room during the 1990s. According to Basit, the key strategy for Pakistan’s success in matches against India revolved around dismissing Tendulkar early. The then-captain, Wasim Akram, emphasized this in team meetings and even during meals, stating, “Dismiss Sachin and we’ll win the match.” Basit recounted how the team was not particularly worried about other Indian batsmen like Mohammad Azharuddin but were genuinely frightened of Tendulkar’s presence at the crease. His dismissal was often seen as a turning point, tipping the balance in Pakistan’s favor.

“He (Tendulkar) was a top order batsman and I was a middle order batsman, so we used to see his batting. In our team meetings, our captain at that time Wasim Akram used to say everywhere, even during practice, even during meals, ‘dismiss Sachin and we’ll win the match.’ And soon as Sachin used to get out, Pakistan used to win the match. Even though the great Azharuddin was there, but we were not scared of Azharuddin, but definitely frightened of Sachin Tendulkar,” said Basit.
