In a remarkable display of skill and composure, young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in the annals of cricket history by scoring a magnificent hundred on his Test debut against West Indies in Dominica. Jaiswal’s outstanding performance on Day 2 of the first Test left cricket enthusiasts in awe of his talent and potential.

Resuming the second day on an unbeaten 40, Jaiswal exhibited a combination of watchfulness and positive intent throughout his innings. The left-handed batter exhibited his supreme class and smacked a well-crafted century, showcasing his maturity at the crease despite being just 21 years old.

Jaiswal’s century on debut placed him in an elite group of Indian cricketers as he become the 17th Test debutant from India to achieve this remarkable feat. The last Indian player to accomplish this milestone was Shreyas Iyer, who did it in 2021 against New Zealand at Kanpur’s Green Park.

What sets Jaiswal’s achievement apart is that he became only the seventh Indian batter and the first in 13 years to hit a Test hundred on debut away from home. The last Indian to attain this remarkable feat was Suresh Raina, who scored an impressive 120 against Sri Lanka in Colombo back in 2010. Jaiswal’s innings reached its crescendo when he finished his remarkable knock on an unbeaten 171, surpassing Raina’s record as the highest scorer on Test debut in away conditions.

Highest scores of Indian batters on Test debut away from home:

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal – 171 against West Indies in 2023
  • Sourav Ganguly – 131 against England in 1996
  • Surinder Amarnath – 124 against New Zealand in 1976
  • Suresh Raina – 120 against Sri Lanka in 2010
  • Abbas Ali Baig – 112 against England in 1959
  • Virender Sehwag – 105 against South Africa in 2001
  • Pravin Amre – 103 against South Africa in 1992

Meanwhile, India won the Dominica Test by an innings and 141 runs. The touring party declared their first innings at 421/5 in reply to hosts’ 150 taking a lead of 271 runs. However, West Indies again came up with a poor show getting dismissed for just 130. Ravichandran Ashwin, who bagged a 5-fer in the first innings, wreaked havoc by taking seven wickets for 71 in 21.3 overs.
