The Republican Party has pummeled Americans with two recent policy decisions—and if they win in November, they could hit us with more.
On Thursday, Senate Republicans successfully blocked a bipartisan bill that would have expanded eligibility for the child tax credit, reducing the amount of federal taxes owed by qualifying families.
The bill was unable to reach the 60-vote threshold required to defeat a filibuster, an archaic procedure that allows a senator to block a vote. Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who has claimed support for children and spewed misogynistic anger toward “childless cat ladies,” was predictably absent and didn’t cast a vote because the GOP vice presidential nominee was out on the campaign trail.
Also this week, Charter Communications, the internet service provider that served the most customers through the federally funded Affordable Connectivity Program, says it is shedding customers who can no longer afford service.
An estimated 23 million Americans rely on the Affordable Connectivity Program, which grew out of the Biden-Harris administration’s initiative to fix the Trump-era Federal Communication Commission’s attack on broadband subsidies for low-income families. The Republican-controlled House’s refusal to continue funding the popular program led to an announcement earlier this year that the program would be winding down by April.
Light Reading reports that Charter lost 159,000 broadband subscribers in the second quarter of this year, with nearly 100,000 of those losses due to the end of the ACP. During a company earnings call, Charter CEO Chris Winfrey said the numbers were mitigated by retention offers but “[t]he real question is the customers' ability to pay—not just now, but over time."
At the top of the ticket, there’s the strange claim that if Donald Trump and the GOP win in November, “everything” will be “fixed”—for Christians, anyway. Yet Republicans are mealy-mouthed when it comes to the specifics of their policy remedies—especially in the wake of the ongoing controversy over Project 2025, the blueprint for an extremist government crafted by at least 140 people who worked in Donald Trump’s administration. However, they have released a series of budget proposals over the past few months that show exactly what they plan to do with working Americans’ hard-earned money.
The GOP has promised to cut more than $1 trillion from Social Security. Republicans have targeted programs like the Affordable Care Act for budget cuts, as well as Medicare—threatening to repeal the Biden-Harris administration’s successful lowering of insulin prices and out-of-pocket costs. They have also promised to slash education funding and cut billions of dollars in climate spending that Democrats were able to secure in the Inflation Reduction Act, along with money set aside to lower housing costs.
And what does the Republican Party plan to do with all of the money they’d theoretically save instead of helping children, working families, seniors, and the Earth? They want to dole out tax cuts that favor the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations.
The next time you hear someone blame Bidenomics, immigrants, and/or “woke” for Americans’ struggles, just remember who Republicans want to give your money to.
