Brampton Wolves beat Toronto Nationals in GT20 Canada 2023
Brampton Wolves secured a nail-biting victory over the Toronto Nationals by just 1 wicket at CAA Centre in the Global T20 Canada 2023 tournament.

Having won the toss, the Toronto Nationals elected to bat first and set a target of 143 runs for the Brampton Wolves. Their innings got off to a decent start with contributions from Hamza Tariq (23 runs off 17 balls) and Colin Munro (24 runs off 22 balls). The standout performance came from Nicholas Kirton, who played a brilliant knock of 50 runs off 40 balls, which included 5 fours and 1 six.

However, the rest of the Nationals’ batting lineup struggled to capitalize on the start, and they finished with a total of 142/8 in their allotted 20 overs. For the Brampton Wolves, the bowling attack performed admirably, with Logan van Beek (3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs) and Shahid Ahmadzai (2 wickets for 23 runs in 4 overs) being the pick of the bowlers. Tim Southee and Hussain Talat also contributed with 2 wickets each, containing the opposition batsmen effectively.

Chasing 143 for victory, the Brampton Wolves faced some early hiccups, losing wickets at regular intervals. Hussain was the standout performer for the Wolves, scoring a crucial 44 runs off 33 balls, which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. Rizwan Cheema also played a crucial hand with a 35-run knock off 28 balls, adding to the team’s cause. However, the Toronto Nationals bowlers kept the pressure on throughout the innings, not allowing the Wolves’ batsmen to settle.

In the final over of the match, with 4 runs needed off 6 balls, Brampton Wolves managed to scrape through with just 1 wicket in hand. Jan Frylinck held his nerve and hit the winning runs, ensuring the Wolves achieved the target with just 1 ball remaining.

Toronto Nationals’ bowlers fought hard and put up an impressive performance, with Zaman Khan (3 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs) and Faheem Ashraf (2 wickets for 21 runs in 3 overs) leading the way. Shahid Afridi also chipped in with 2 wickets. In recognition of his match-winning performance with the bat, Hussain was deservedly awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ title.
