Shubman Gill, Babar Azam
In a significant shift within the world of cricket, India’s Shubman Gill has ousted Pakistan’s Babar Azam from the top spot in the latest ICC men’s batting rankings. Released on Wednesday, the new rankings reflect Gill’s exceptional performance at the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, propelling him to the coveted No.1 position previously held by Azam for over two years.

Shubman Gill joins the elite list of Indian batters

Gill, the young sensation in Indian cricket team, marks his place among the elite, becoming only the fourth player from India, following the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, to achieve this feat. Gill’s recent contributions, including a remarkable score of 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa, have solidified his position, accumulating a total of 219 runs from six innings in the tournament so far. However, Gill’s journey to the top wasn’t without hurdles, as he missed India’s initial matches against Australia and Afghanistan due to dengue.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam, Pakistan’s team captain, now stands second on the list with a total of 282 runs from eight innings at the World Cup. His recent drop in the rankings, trailing Gill by six rating points, indicates the intense competition at play in the global cricket arena.

In a parallel development, India’s iconic batsman Virat Kohli has also made a remarkable entry into the top five, showcasing his exceptional form in the ongoing World Cup.

Mohammed Siraj regains the top spot among bowlers

Moreover, in the bowler’s rankings, Mohammed Siraj’s outstanding performance has catapulted him to the pinnacle of the list for ODI bowlers, securing the top spot with 10 wickets at the World Cup. Notably, Siraj’s fellow Indian teammates Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have also made impressive strides within the top 10.

While South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj and Adam Zampa of Australia also experienced notable advancements within the top 10. The previous No.1 ODI bowler Shaheen Afridi faced a slight setback, dropping four places to share the fifth position with Josh Hazlewood.

Shakib Al Hasan retains his No. 1 position among all-rounders

Furthermore, despite his early exit from the World Cup due to injury, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan continues to reign as the No.1 ranked all-rounder, while Australia’s Glenn Maxwell showcased a commendable rise, improving two spots to secure the sixth position after his standout performance against Afghanistan.

These recent developments have set the stage for an exhilarating remainder of the World Cup 2023, with players from various nations vying for top positions and creating an intense rivalry that is sure to captivate cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
