Notably, Rahul has had a disappointing time with the bat in the recent past, with his last fifty coming in January 2022 against South Africa in Johannesburg. In the ongoing series against the Aussies, Rahul, while opening the innings, has returned scores of 20, 17 and 1. No wonder the Karnataka cricketer has been on the receiving end of severe criticism from all corners. In fact, Rahul was also removed as vice-captain of Team India following his string of low scores.
Rahul’s spot was up for debate, and his removal from the vice-captain’s post only added to the chorus. Many experts and fans are now even endorsing Shubman Gill over Rahul as India’s opener. Meanwhile, skipper Rohit Sharma has also given his take on the red-hot topic. Ahead of the third Test, which is scheduled to begin on March 01 at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, Rohit reckoned that Rahul’s removal as the vice-captain of the Test side indicates nothing.
“I said it after the last game also. When we talk about players going through a tough time, anyone with potential will be given enough time to prove himself. Being vice-captain or not being vice-captain doesn’t tell you anything. At that point in time, when he was the vice-captain, he was probably the senior most. His removal of vice-captaincy doesn’t indicate anything,” said Rohit in a media interaction.
Gill, who is pitted to replace Rahul as an opener for the upcoming Test, has had a longer batting session, suggesting he might play the third Test. However, when asked about the same to Rohit, the Nagpur-born termed it as nothing but a routine process. Rohit mentioned he would disclose the XI only at the toss.
“As far as Gill and KL both are concerned, that is how they train and practice before any game. Today was an optional training session for the entire group. All 17-18 are in the reckoning. It’s not just about Gill and Rahul. But as far as our XI is concerned, we have not finalised it yet. I prefer it to be announced at the toss. Can’t count out last-minute injuries and all, and we will keep it interesting for you guys as well,” added Rohit.
