Current title holders Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by 62 runs in Qualifier 2 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday (May 26)—the win over Mumbai sent Gujarat to the final; where they will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday (May 28).

Defending a target of 234 runs, GT bowled out MI for 171 in 18.2 overs, with Mohit Sharma claiming five wickets. Meanwhile, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami scalped two dismissals.

The second innings started with a setback for MI as they lost Ishan Kishan to an eye injury even, followed by impact sub Nehal Wadhera falling early to Shami. GT pacer Shami strucked again, dismissing Rohit Sharma with a miscued pull shot towards fine-leg.

The 52-runs partnership between Mr.360 of MI Surya Kumar Yadav and all-rounder Cameron Green tried to put some fight for the team. But the Irish pacer Josh Little provided an important breakthrough in the form of Green and ended the partnership that was looking to take away the game from the hands of GT.

GT skipper Hardik Pandya made a crucial decision to bring in Sharma in the 15th over of the game, and it proved to be a masterstroke. Sharma immediately impacted by taking the crucial wicket of Surya, which left the MI’ dugout shell-shocked and the batter himself in disbelief.

On the second ball of the over, Surya dispatched the white leather for the six. He was looking to make the over big by scoring a few more runs so that the required run rate of the team would be kept under check. But Sharma controlled his nerves and delivered a gutsy full delivery that shattered Yadav’s stumps.

It was a big blow for the Mumbai , as Yadav was considered the man who could lead them to victory. The entire MI team realized the significance of the wicket, and Sharma himself looked towards the heavens, grateful for the breakthrough. Surya departed after scoring a well-fought 61 runs off 38 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes.

It was a complete batting failure for MI; Surya top-scored for Rohit’s side and was the only batter to reached the mark of fifty runs. With powerful strokes and intelligent shot selection, he kept the hopes of MI supporters alive. But after the fall of Surya’s wicket, the clutches of Gujarat bowlers kept getting tighter and it became difficult for Mumbai’s batters to bat freely. The score of MI at one stage was 155-4 but soon it became 171-10.
