Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took on Mumbai Indians (MI) in match no. 5 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and registered a dominating eight wickets victory over the Mumbai-based team.

Asked to bat first, MI put up a decent score of 171/7 in their 20 overs courtesy of Tilak Varma’s splendid 84-run knock. Meanwhile, Karn Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for RCB, taking two wickets for 32 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Mohammed Siraj and Harshal Patel also chipped in with a scalp each for their team.

In response, RCB got off to a flyer, with openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli scoring 73 and 82 runs, respectively. The batting duo made the MI bowlers look ordinary with their fluent strokeplay and excellent running between the wickets. During his innings, Virat smashed eleven boundaries, including five sixes. Two of those five maximums came against MI’s Jofra Archer.

The first maximum that Virat hit off Jofra came on the fifth delivery of the 4th over when the former stepped out of his crease and belted the right arm pacer over long-off for a flat six. Meanwhile, the second six that Virat struck was over the deep square leg on a short delivery.

Talking about the result of the match, RCB chased down the target of 172 runs with ease in just 16.2 overs, losing only two wickets in the process. Du Plessis was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his brilliant knock.

The Bangalore-based team will next face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Thursday, April 6. While RCB will enter the ground with two points in their pocket, the Kolkata-based side would be eying to register their maiden win in the 16th edition of the IPL. Notably, KKR faced a seven-run defeat at the hands of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their first game.
