Kevin ends the day with a 'win'—an adjournment, after losing the 11th round

There’s much discussion of would-be House Speaker and 10-time failure Kevin McCarthy reaching a deal with is opposition—not to actually win, mind you, but to lose by less. Also to get some people to vote “present.” They’ve got to be careful there, because of the planned absences among Republicans (as many as three). It could end in the inadvertent election of the guy who’s won the popular vote 10 times now, Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. Follow along with us here to see what happens next. Probably just another failed vote, but you never know.

And everybody is going to go home, to return tomorrow noon for the 12th vote and the fire sale of all of McCarthy’s worldly goods to the maniacs.

So who knows what Gaetz was doing with all that running back and forth. Anyway, the Rs are sticking together and the Ds are sticking together and it looks like they’re going home shortly.

Republicans sticking together for adjournment. Gaetz, Boebert, Biggs all voting YES to adjourn

Tons of members meeting in Emmer’s office — Massie, Clyde, Roy, Norman, Perry, Gosar, Bishop, Jordan among them — all filtered out to go vote on the motion to adjourn. Roy and Perry didn’t respond when I asked how negotiations were progressing

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:55:03 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Democrats are more efficient voters. I guess they have to be.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:52:05 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

The Dems give a very sustained vocal no. Chair rules for the noes, a 15 minute recorded vote is ordered.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:51:07 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Scalise moves for adjournment.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:48:53 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Ok, a really suspenseful moment after a tedious day, a probable motion to adjourn.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:48:16 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

About that deal, the whole shebang would go to the Freedom Caucus, or at least everything that matters at all.

If this deal goes thru and McCarthy become speaker, you’re looking at a House where McCarthy is speaker and/but the Freedom Caucus is at the table on all big things: rules for floor, standoffs on budgets, and spreading HFC moves to key fiscal committees (approps, budget, etc.)…

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:42:21 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

It’s all pretty confusing, but fwiw:

Alrighty.. Motion to adjourn until noon tomorrow is upcoming -- Dems are whipping no

— Sarah Ferris (@sarahnferris) January 6, 2023

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:37:36 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

They had better not be trying to get a recess to cut this deal. Either they vote again or everyone goes home for the night. (Are we getting tired of this? Just a little.)

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:36:20 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Gaetz still going back and froth between the maniacs and the Democrats and the Democratic crew gathered around Neguse, Clark, and Jeffries keeps growing.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:32:14 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Sherman with Punchbowl says there’s a deal, and “pushing to elect a speaker tonight, per sources involved in the talks.” Gaetz has been in discussion with Democratic leaders, who are now in deep discussion.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:23:39 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Gaetz seen conferring with Democrats. They could be talking about if they’ll allow an adjournment tonight.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:16:54 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

He still doesn’t have enough votes to get an adjournment, so McCarthy’s self-inflicted humiliation seem likely to go on tonight.

UPDATE: Friday, Jan 6, 2023 · 12:07:16 AM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

This vote doesn’t seem to be promising anything new for McCarthy, but dinner was just delivered to the office he’s squatting in, folks in the Capitol report. That suggests they’re planing to be there for a while.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:52:05 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

That’s six and another vote lost for McCarthy.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:45:27 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

OF COURSE HE WANTS MORE. That’s what happens when you negotiate with terrorists.

TALKS: @RepRalphNorman likes deal so far but wants more. This is “round one”. Doesn’t support adjournment tonight

— Erik Wasson (@elwasson) January 5, 2023

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:43:18 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Ok, finally got there. Hern. Who keeps voting for McCarthy.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:41:38 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

He still hasn’t said who he is nominating. Maybe himself?

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:39:46 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Can we step back and appreciate how insane it is that, after 3 days of votes, the current goal of GOP leadership isn’t winning the vote but instead finding a deal that can adjourn voting.

— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) January 5, 2023

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:39:33 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Good still hasn’t said who he’s nominating.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:37:53 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

“Please clap.” LOL

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:37:35 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

And now it’s Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) who is speechifying while forgetting to say who he is nominating.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:33:10 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Yes, Gaetz has a lot of interest in criminal justice reform.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:32:19 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Gawd, they’re inflicting us with Gaetz and Trump again.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:29:58 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

That there is an 11th vote tonight means that there aren’t enough McCarthy foes ready to help them adjourn . . . yet. But there is still deal making in the works. So far it’s a deal that has McCarthy losing by fewer votes, but still losing.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:24:50 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO) nominates Jeffries.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:23:32 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

I love how they’re trying to rewrite the history of this fiasco as they go. It’s a glorious example of democracy in action and it’s been led by the “center left.” That’s what Hill actually just said. What goes on in those people’s heads.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:21:58 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Ok, new rule (I know, there are no rules): 2 minute limit to nomination speeches.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:20:03 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

He’s definitely going for number 11. Rep. French Hill (R-AR) doing the McCarthy nomination honors this time. Cut spending, blah blah blah
