Live coverage: Tenth time is not the charm for McCarthy's speaker dreams

It would appear that Kevin McCarthy has a masochism problem, in addition to being a numbskull. Eight losing votes has not been enough to convince him that he will not succeed in rallying his full Republican caucus behind him. Or even 218 of them, so to round nine we go.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:16:38 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

And we’re doing vote eleven. wheeee.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:15:18 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

All right, the last vote count is official. Jeffries wins again, though of course doesn’t “win.”

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 11:02:22 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Maybe all that meeting and promises of a deal are just a deal to adjourn. That’s apparently in the works.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:43:08 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

This far into the deal and only now they’re getting something in writing?

/2 Norman says there’s an agreement in writing as he heads into Emmer’s office. He’s been asked to look at it

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:35:00 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

They’re going to try to adjourn after this vote.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:31:28 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

And Gaetz came out of the meeting and still says he’s a no.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:28:27 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Lots of rumors about an impending deal. Apparently even Gaetz and Boebert have been in on this round of meetings. It’d be pretty rich if the caved at this point.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:15:33 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

C-SPAN does not have up its chyron tracking the vote, but if we’ve counted correctly, McCarthy has lost for a tenth time.

Anna Paulina Luna, speaking from the floor, says the media is trying to pit Republicans against each other. She made this proclamation during a nomination speech on the 10th ballot for speaker in the GOP controlled House.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:04:19 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Boebert again nominates Hern, and at least keeps it very short.

So now they move on to the roll call. Again.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:02:56 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Here comes Rep. Anna Luna to nominate Donalds. She is positively Boebertian in her delivery and eloquence.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 10:00:00 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Rep. Pete Aguilar is once again nominating Jeffries, showing off the Democratic unity that means Jeffries doesn’t need to try a different person each time in an effort to get his party’s votes.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:55:19 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Jamie Dupree notes this is the first time the speaker election has gone to a tenth vote since 1859.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:50:31 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Here we go again: They’re gearing up for the tenth vote, with Rep. Juan Ciscomani nominating McCarthy.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:43:37 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

C-SPAN reports that Buck is out tonight and tomorrow for a medical appointment, while Hern’s mother died and he will be out for her funeral if voting goes into the weekend.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:39:28 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Whoops, make that 200 for McCarthy, after Rep. Ken Buck did not vote.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:34:21 PM +00:00 · Laura Clawson

Once again the unofficial results are McCarthy 201, Jeffries 212. Twenty Republicans voted for Donalds or Hern, and one voted present. The only thing that changes from vote to vote is which non-McCarthy Republicans get how many votes.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:27:25 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Gaetz and Biggs are fundraising off their McCarthy opposition, in case you needed any more indication that they are never going to vote for him.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:20:49 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Do you believe this? I don’t believe this.

“I can at least see the end,” says Rep. Patrick McHenry, a McCarthy ally… He says they continue to offer promises/assurances to HFC on policy items. When asked to describe them, he said it’s politics he would be proud of.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:12:48 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

More history stuff. This is the tied for the 7th longest speakers election out of the (now) 15 that have gone to multiple ballots. The last time they went to 10 ballots was 1833. Also, Hakeem Jeffries is coming up on a record number of votes for speaker. Someone on twitter has been following, and estimates that by the middle of the 11th round, he’ll have surpassed Pelosi’s career total.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 9:01:46 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Gaetz abandons Trump to vote for Hern. Hern votes for McCarthy.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:56:07 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

I don’t believe these promises of developments anymore. We’re trapped in this timeline forever. But I would like an elaboration on “whatnots.”

Leaving a meeting off the House floor, Rep. Fitzpatrick predicts that we’ll “see some movement in the next 24 hours or so” But a wrinkle for tomorrow: “We're gonna be missing some numbers for medical issues and whatnot.”

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:51:42 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Ok, 72 votes in and McCarthy has lost. Again.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:44:01 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Boebert said her speech would be short. It’s not.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:40:06 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Okay big surprise! Fourth nomination from Boebert for Kevin Hern. She is just so bad at this speaking bidness.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:34:28 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Rosendale is that guy in public forums who comes to the mic for question time and says “I don't have so much a question as a 18-part comment.”

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:33:08 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Asshole calls out Maxine Waters and then says “there are no rules” and “I didn’t use anyone’s name.” Asshole.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:30:09 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Ok, let’s talk about this bitching from Rosendale about the power held by the Speaker. It’s true. It’s a problem. And it was created by their guy Newt Gingrich years ago, a project that the GOP threw itself into with wild abandon. Yes, subsequent speakers including Nancy Pelosi did not work to restore balance and kept power in the leadership. There is a problem in that. But lately it’s largely because fucking maniacs took over the GOP and it was to protect the nation from people who want to—quite literally—destroy the government and everything it does.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:25:45 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Montanan Matt Rosendale nominates Donalds.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:24:58 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

It is now Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) nominating Democrat Jeffries, detailing the accomplishments a united Democratic majority achieved. This does provide a very good opportunity to just keep hammering away at those facts about the Democrats: united and accomplished.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:21:38 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

The argument for electing McCarthy because they now have the power to kick him out at any time is a pretty bizarre turn. There just really aren’t words for how absurd this whole situation has become. They haven’t been invented in English. German probably has them.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:18:36 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

They know they don’t have the votes to adjourn, so they’re not evein going to try. Here we go again. Freedom Caucus guy Troy Nehls is nominating McCarthy this time. They’re probably going to kick him out for this.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan 5, 2023 · 8:15:39 PM +00:00 · Joan McCarter

Three cheers for C-SPAN, huh? And absolutely this should always be the way the cameras operate—it’s how C-SPAN wants to do it, being allowed to show multiple camera angles. The Speaker, when there is one, is in charge of that, and they clamp down on the cameras and what can be shown. In case you were wondering why we’ve seen so much more of the chamber over the last few days.
