Tonight, voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District are choosing a replacement for former Rep. George Santos, who was expelled by the House in December. Democrats are hoping that former Rep. Tom Suozzi can reclaim the seat he represented for three terms while Republicans have united behind a relative newcomer, Nassau County Legislator Mazi Pilip.

So, it’s an early night here at DKE Election Night HQ, but for the best possible reasons. The Republicans in Pennsylvania and New York so thoroughly messed the bed that the outcome was known before bedtime. A very good night for the blue team, no matter what inevitable excuses arise from the GOP and their media enablers.

Next up on the live-coverage calendar: March 5th, when the downballot primary season begins in earnest with the two populous states in the Union ready to take center stage: California and Texas, as well as a handful of other states. Until then, keep glued to Daily Kos Elections for the latest on all things Election 2024. Thanks for hanging out tonight, and we’ll see y’all back here for another election night in three short weeks!

Democrat Tom Suozzi will be returning to Congress after winning Tuesday’s special election to replace former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the House in an unprecedented December vote.

With tonight’s decisive win for the Democrats, the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives is cut to just four seats.

Wow.

All things considered, that was pretty fast. The Associated Press has called the NY-03 special election for Democrat Tom Suozzi, who has defeated Republican Mazi Pilip.

We just got a massive drop from Nassau County (about 65,000 votes). This is presumably early and absentee votes, and they went for the Democrat, Tom Suozzi, by 16 points. Republican Mazi Pilip is going to have to absolutely throttle him in the day-of vote to have a shot, as she currently trails by 16,300 votes.

For those wondering why we’re in a holding pattern, it is because almost none of Nassau County is in. In 2022, over four-fifths (82%) of the total vote in NY-03 came from Nassau County.

So….we wait.

OKLAHOMA: While we wait for Nassau County to start counting votes, we can report that Democrats got a monster overperformance in a Trump +26 Oklahoma state House district, centered in Edmond. In the race, Republican Erick Harris eked out a 50-45 win over Democrat Regan Raff. A Libertarian candidate scooped up the remaining 5% of the vote.

For some necessary perspective, according to NYT estimates, 82% of the vote from Queens (the more Democratic part of the district) is in, but only 2% of the vote from Nassau County (which Santos won by 10 points in 2022) is in. That’s why even though Democrat Tom Suozzi has a 23-point lead over Republican Mazi Pilip, no one is popping champagne yet.

This special election night is already underway, and we’ve already received some good news in the form of Democrats maintaining control of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Democrat Jim Prokopiak was declared the winner by the Associated Press shortly after the polls closed, leaving the Democrats staked to a 102-100 majority (there is one Republican vacancy).

Meanwhile, polls have just closed in the past fifteen minutes in NY-03, where voters are replacing the gone-and-not-lamented George Santos. Democrat Tom Suozzi has an early edge, but it is almost entirely votes out of Queens thus far, so disproportionately Democratic thus far.
