Mumbai Police has arrested a Hyderabad based engineer for issuing online rape threats to Virat Kohli’s 10-years-old daughter. The incident occurred after India’s back-to-back defeats in the first two matches of the T20 World Cup 2021 against Pakistan and New Zealand.

The accused, who is identified as Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini, was taken into custody by a cyber cell team of Mumbai Police on Wednesday afternoon. He reportedly changed his Twitter profile and pretended to be a Pakistani user after cops started investigating the threats. Akubathini will be presented in front of the court for further custody.

The series of hateful comments started appearing on social media after India’s defeat against Pakistan on October 24. On these threats, the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) took a firm stance and issued a notice to Delhi Police for taking immediate actions against the rape threats made on Kohli’s daughter.

“This is the time to stand behind our team, not against them. Even if India lost to Pakistan, the players and their families don’t deserve hatred. Her letter went on to add. I expect immediate registration of an FIR and arrests in the matter. Such people should be taught a lesson,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal wrote to Delhi Police.

On the other hand, Mumbai Police had been investigating the threats as Virat and Anushka are currently the residents of their city.

Talking about Team India, their campaign in the multi-team tournament has been done and dusted as they got eliminated after the group stage. The Men in Blue could only win three out of their five matches and finished third in the points-table of Group 2.

India will next face New Zealand at home in an all-format series, starting November 17.
