Ian Blackford, the SNP’s Westminster leader, called the planned National Insurance rise a “regressive Tory poll tax” during Prime Minister’s Questions today in the Commons.

The planned 1.25 percentage point rise to National Insurance in order to raise money for the NHS and adult social care dominated the debate.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “Isn’t this the same old Tory party always putting their rich mates and donors before working people?”

But Boris Johnson defended his party’s position, saying: “The best thing we can do for them [working people] is to have a strong and dynamic economy.”
