The best antidote to hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,272 registered voters was conducted online from Dec. 4-7 and finds that 50% of Americans view racism as a major problem in the United States. Further, just 18% of Americans believe police interactions with people of color have improved over the past year; 9% believe the police have gotten worse, and 27% think that the police did not need to improve to begin with.
Attitudes regarding policing, race, and racism are sharply divided along partisan lines. More than half of Republicans (54%) believe that the status quo of how police interact with people of color is acceptable. Despite the fact that half of Americans view racism as a major problem, just 10% of Republicans agree with this. Fully 60% of Republicans say that they do not discuss racism at home. Nearly one-half of Republicans (47%) oppose teaching children about race and racism at all.
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
Additional issues surveyed include the pandemic’s impact on holiday plans and viewership of Fox News, Newsmax, One American News Network, and MSNBC.
This poll’s findings demonstrate that Americans understand that racism is a major problem and law enforcement has much more work to do in terms of how police interact with people of color.
