Ousted House speaker auditions as Trump’s attack dog—and fails

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is trying to keep himself relevant by taking up for Donald Trump and attacking Vice President Kamala Harris to any media outlet that will talk to him. So far, it’s not going well.

In an interview with The Hill, the Republican who was ousted by members of his own party accused Harris of creating a toxic work environment in her Senate office.

“It’s known in Washington, it is a heroic work environment,” McCarthy said. “If you work for her, nobody lasts very long. Even as VP when she didn’t do anything, she could not keep staff.”

He did not pass up an opportunity to lean hard into sexist stereotypes about women bosses.

“How she treats people around her is a real indication of what she’ll do in the future,” McCarthy claimed.

To be fair, there was some high-profile turnover among Harris’ staff during her first year as vice president, attributed to “burnout, money, and concern,” as Axios reported in 2021. Gosh, it’s hard to imagine that being thrown into trying to rebuild the country that Donald Trump tried to destroy—during a pandemic, mind you—would burn people out.

As it turns out, there are couple of other people, including a senator and a former president, whose staff turnover rate blows Harris’ out of the water.

Donald Trump ended his four years in office with a 92% turnover rate among his “A Team,” according to Brookings. That comprises the most influential positions within the executive office. By comparison, President Joe Biden has had a 71% turnover rate so far.

Then there’s Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

“From October 2023-June 2024, Vance's office saw a 0.41 staff turnover, far exceeding the average Senate staff turnover of 0.24 and placing his office in the 93rd percentile for highest turnover,” Legistorm reported Monday.

For example, during her time as a senator, presumed Democratic presidential nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris' staff turnover only increased from 0.12 in FY2017 to 0.21 in FY2018. Similarly, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), who has been floated as a potential running mate to Harris, had a staff turnover of 0.10 in FY2021 and saw a mere raise in turnover in FY2022 to 0.16. …

Vance's increase in staff turnover spans months before he was announced as former President Donald Trump's pick.

That’s quite a comparison! It’s also typical of McCarthy’s ineptitude to not do any research before spouting off.

McCarthy also has a very whiny and personal complaint: Harris wouldn’t meet with him when she was in the Senate. Yes, they were in the same congressional delegation from California, but who was bothering to meet with McCarthy at the time? No one was taking him seriously back then, when he was best known for picking out Trump’s Starburst candies so that the president with a childish palate would get only the colors he likes (pink and red, for the morbidly curious).

With these guys, it’s all projection, all the time.

Let's give McCarthy more to whine about, and keep Kamala Harris surging!
