Republicans would love it if we just relaxed, but no chance: There are two huge races coming up

We all have reason to feel good about Democrats’ unexpectedly strong showing in the November midterms, and it would be understandably tempting if we all just wanted to take a bit of a break.

But that’s exactly what Republicans are hoping we’ll do. And like hell if we’re going to do anything Republicans want—ever.

Truly, there are no off-years in American politics. As soon as one election ends, another begins, and that’s just as true now as ever. In fact, there are two races with enormous stakes coming up right away:

  • In Virginia, Virginia Beach City Councilman Aaron Rouse is running to flip a vacant GOP-held seat in the state Senate in a special election taking place on Jan. 10. If Rouse wins, it would expand Democrats’ skinny 21-19 majority in the Senate to 22-18, and crucially, it would make sure that one notoriously unreliable anti-choice Democrat, Joe Morrisey, can’t collaborate with Republicans to enact an abortion ban—a serious risk, since Republicans already control the governorship and state House. (For a complete backgrounder on this contest, click here.)
  • In Wisconsin, Milwaukee Judge Janet Protaseiwicz is seeking to flip the state Supreme Court from a 4-3 conservative majority to a 4-3 progressive majority on April 4. If she succeeds, the court could undo Republican gerrymanders, block GOP voter suppression efforts, and even strike down the state’s near-total abortion ban that dates back to 1849. And if Donald Trump’s sycophants try to steal Wisconsin’s electoral votes in 2024, the court would stand as rock against the subversion of our democracy. (To learn more about this race, click here.)

Both Rouse and Protaseiwicz need as big a boost from progressives as we can possibly provide, since Republicans understand just how consequential both races are—and they’re eager to spin up their dark money machines to spew lies about our side. But as we well know, there’s no better antidote to corporate cash than small-dollar grassroots donations. And when we all act together, we can do mighty things. Just ask the many victorious candidates that Daily Kos supported in the midterms.

Please donate $10 apiece to Daily Kos-backed candidates in Virginia and Wisconsin so they can beat back the right and protect our values!
