The wicket of Gill sparked a huge controversy and debate on the internet. Many veteran cricketers and fans called out the decision of the umpire and expressed their dissatisfaction on social media. The right-handed opener himself also shared a post regarding the same on his official Twitter handle and took a dig at the match official by sharing emojis of magnifying glasses and a disappointed face.
It is worth mentioning that the catch by Green at the gully was rechecked seven times by the TV umpire before he reached onto the conclusion that the Aussie fielder’s fingers were beneath the ball. However, Rohit Sharma and Shubman weren’t convinced by the decision.
Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has now shared his opinion on the controversial incident. Ponting even talked about Gill’s tweet and opined on possible repercussions the latter may face for his behaviour.
Speaking on Star Sports, the veteran Aussie cricketer said that the question he has in his mind is if the ball touched the ground before the catch was completed.
“Been talking about Green in that gully region, six foot, seven inches tall, huge wingspan, dies low to his left. The ball went into his hand, maybe six, eight inches above the ground. The question I’ve got was did any part of the ball actually touched the ground just after he completed the catch? I’m sure that’s what Rohit Sharma’s arguing with the umpires about and I’m sure that’s why Shubman Gill is so disappointed,” said Ponting.
Later, Ponting also expressed his views on Gill’s dig at the umpire and said that the Punjab cricketer might face a suspension or fine for his behaviour.
“That is a direct crack at the umpire for the decision that they made. You can’t do that. The whole world was going to do that for him … he didn’t need to say a word. Something is definitely going to come of that. There will be some sort of fine or maybe even a suspension,” reflected Ponting on Shubman’s Tweet.
