Ravichandran Ashwin picks the standout performer of Team India
Team India showcased a brilliant performance in the recently-concluded ODI World Cup 2023, winning all 10 matches in the tournament before facing their only defeat in the finals against Australia on November 19.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s revelation

In the aftermath of the campaign, India’s star spin-bowling all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, has disclosed his pick for the standout performer of the team. Ashwin, known for his cricket insights, singled out a batter who made a significant impact with his impressive batting throughout the ODI World Cup.

Ashwin named Shreyas Iyer as the standout performer. Iyer had a memorable debut ODI World Cup, amassing 530 runs in 11 matches at an impressive average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.24. The right-handed batter played a crucial role in guiding India to their fourth final in the tournament.

Star batter’s remarkable show

During the tournament, Iyer notched up two successive centuries, becoming only the third Indian after head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma to achieve this feat. Despite a challenging final, where he scored four runs off three deliveries, Iyer’s overall contribution earned him the recognition as one of India’s top performers in the World Cup.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised Iyer as a standout player, emphasizing his prowess in batting against spin. He highlighted Iyer’s unique ability to chase excellence, stating, “Batting against spin and taking them down is Shreyas’ speciality, and he is a standout performer. Chasing excellence is a rare commodity in sports. If somebody does something unique, people, instead of appreciating it, tell them not to do it.”

Notably, Iyer finished as India’s third-highest run-scorer in the ODI World Cup 2023, following Rohit (597 runs) and Virat Kohli (765 runs).
