Notably, Surya has so far scored 294 runs in the 50-over format in eight innings at an impressive average of 49. Similarly, in the T20 Internationals (T20Is), he recently went past the tally of 500 runs with a scintillating century in the final T20 game against England.
The Pune-born batter, who has now established himself as an important member of Team India in the middle order, credited skipper Rohit Sharma for his growth as a cricketer.
Surya revealed how Rohit helped him gain confidence and improve his game, especially with respect to handling the pressure. The right-handed batter, who represents Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, spoke about the 2021 season of the cash-rich league where Rohit supported him while he was struggling with the form.
“He’s been watching me and talking about my cricket since I played domestic cricket. Coming into IPL in 2018-19, we used to talk a lot about my game, how I can improve, handle pressure situations and move forward and take the game ahead. We have had a lot of chat about my game, and I have literally felt him on the ground whenever he’s leading. I have learnt a lot from him. I’m really happy he has shown a lot of confidence in me,” said Suryakumar in a presser.
“I still remember during the 2021 IPL second leg, I was not going through a good patch, and he was the one who had a lot of chat with me (and supported me). The way things are going, I would like to pay back that confidence by scoring runs and winning the game for the team,” he added.
