The good, the bad, and the downright ugly start to Republican leadership in Congress

It is Day One of a new Congress, one narrowly controlled by Republicans and right out of the gate they started delivering to the American people. Republicans floated one policy idea after another: climate change, health care, inflation, crime ... just kidding. It was a bigger shitshow than even we could have imagined.

Republicans are voting on a new House speaker and Kevin McCarthy is scrambling for the final votes, even from the likes of George Santos—if in fact that is his real name. You can follow the live vote here, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the train wreck happening inside and outside the halls of Congress today.

Off to a great start on Fox News ahead of the speaker vote:

Dan Crenshaw on Fox & Friends blasts Republicans who won't vote for McCarthy: "Some of the reasons that these people have for not voting for McCarthy are unbelievably petty ... it makes us look foolish" pic.twitter.com/YrCfD1mi65

Foolish, indeed.

Very tense behind closed doors now. McCarthy is teeing off on his opponents and saying they don’t know how to get to yes. He is signaling he is done negotiating. A McCarthy ally, Mike Rogers, says members who oppose McCarthy could lose committee assignments. Chip Roy pushing back

How do you convince people to work with you when they absolutely refuse to do so no matter what you offer? Welcome to how the Republican Party has been operating for more than a decade.

Bob Good told me that even if McCarthy agreed to all their concessions, he is still a NO. They’ve had a dispute lingering since Good’s past primary win, but he said that he told McCarthy nothing he could offer him would get him to YES. More on the dilemma: https://t.co/g3pLnJ5TvB

As it stands, I will not be voting for Kevin McCarthy to be Speaker of the House. pic.twitter.com/rUDuHS45hH

Rep. Matt Rosendale R- MT accuses McCarthy of lying. Rosendale says he will not support ANYONE for Speaker who has been on the House GOP leadership team in the past 10 years

Meanwhile, Democrats made their way to the House floor.

McCarthy emerged from the Republican meeting and Kevin, never let ‘em see you sweat.

.@GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy: "We did have an intense conference...we may have a battle on the floor but the battle is for the conference and the country and that's fine with me...I don't have a problem getting a record for the most votes for speaker, too..." pic.twitter.com/Awje43wVwS

Just oozing with confidence.

Meanwhile, it seems as if Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s frenemies are turning up the heat, because she was having a miniature meltdown.

They don’t have a House speaker yet, but Republicans did start making immediate changes, beginning with an order to remove the metal detectors leading to the House floor.

Guess they aren’t so worried about crime after all.

Stay tuned for more drama from the hallways of Congress! We’ve got a long day ahead of us.

.@RepKClark: "Democrats are united behind Hakeem Jeffries. He's our speaker candidate and this chaos that we're seeing is exactly what happens when people like Kevin McCarthy put power over everything else." https://t.co/9MX2YqfgRL pic.twitter.com/p9QRvAAO3x

How sad is it that McCarthy desperately needed this vote? From someone who may or may not be named George Santos.

Yikes.

— DCCC (@dccc) January 3, 2023

It’s going great!

McCarthy asked just now about possibility speaker’s race last for days: “it could”

— Jordain Carney (@jordainc) January 3, 2023

What exactly is happening here?

Any body language or lip-reading experts wanna weigh in on this conversation between AOC and Paul Gosar just now? pic.twitter.com/Kb3Sx0Os3x

— Cabot Phillips (@cabot_phillips) January 3, 2023

Some things never change:

JFC. Andrea Mitchell just asked Rep. Dingell if any Dems would support McCarthy "for the sake of the institution" Republicans are will to destroy the institution and our democracy. but leave it to Mitchell to find a way to implicate Dems in their mess

— Joe Sudbay (@JoeSudbay) January 3, 2023

Weber of Texas: "McCarthy for the win." Someone on the Democratic side: "I doubt it."

— Grace Segers (@Grace_Segers) January 3, 2023

Meanwhile, over on the Senate side:

Ope! Let’s check in again with Fox News:

You can tell that the speaker fight is bad for Republicans because Fox News is desperate not to talk about it. pic.twitter.com/uHwlCaAe67

— Matthew Gertz (@MattGertz) January 3, 2023

And as Paul Harvey used to say, now we know the rest of the story:

On her floor convo with Rep. Gosar earlier, AOC tells me that McCarthy made claims within the GOP conf. that some Ds would walk away to lower the threshold. Gosar was asking AOC for clarification — would she walk away? “We would never do that,” AOC told me. Jeffries all the way. pic.twitter.com/yDsbJjFIPU

What better way to start the year than by previewing the biggest contests of 2023 on this week's episode of The Downballot? Progressives will want to focus on a Jan. 10 special election for the Virginia state Senate that would allow them to expand their skinny majority; the April 4 battle for the Wisconsin Supreme Court that could let progressives take control from conservatives; Chicago's mayoral race; gubernatorial contests in Kentucky and Louisiana; and much, much more.
