Bangladesh strong after batters dominate Day 3
Bangladesh gained the advantage on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand after a scintillating batting display in Mount Maunganui.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy, batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, captain Mominul Haque, and wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das all shined with the bat to help Bangladesh to a historic first innings lead over Black Caps.

Mahmudul Hasan scored 78 off 228 balls, while Najmul made 64 from 109 deliveries before Neil Wagner dismissed both the batters. Soon Trent Boult removed Musfiqur Rahim to reduce the tourists at 203/4.

Then, captain Mominul and Liton paired up to take the team out of hot waters. The duo ended up forming a dominating 158 runs partnership for the fifth wicket to put the hosts on the backfoot. Boult broke the crucial stand by dismissing Mominul 12 short of the latter’s century. The left-arm pacer didn’t just stop there as he soon got rid of another set batter Liton for 86.

At stumps, Bangladesh reached 401/6 in reply to New Zealand’s 328, leading the hosts by 73 runs with Yasir Ali (11 no) and Medidy Haasan (20 no) at the crease.

Here is how Twitter reacted:

Delighted to see that the promise seen in Liton Das is beginning to flower.

Bangladesh has taken the first-innings lead…with six wickets still in hand. Quite an achievement. A little over two days of play left…could be an exciting Test match. #NZvBan
