Sri Lanka’s early struggles and Charith Asalanka’s resilient ton
Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka’s innings faced an early setback as they lost key wickets. Kusal Perera departed with a mere five runs on the scoreboard, and shortly after, Kusal Mendis followed suit, leaving Sri Lanka in a precarious position. The responsibility to stabilize the innings now rested on the capable shoulders of Charith Asalanka, who, in conjunction with Pathum Nissanka, embarked on the challenging task of resurrecting their team’s
fortunes.
Asalanka played a splendid innings, amassing 108 runs from 105 deliveries. His outstanding performance featured six well-struck boundaries and five impressive sixes. The left-handed batter was well supported by Nissanka, who contributed a crucial 41 runs and played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s resurgence, allowing them to post a competitive total of 279 runs before eventually being bowled out. Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/80.

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib al Hasan smash match-winning fifties
With a target of 280 runs to chase down, Bangladesh needed a strong start to their innings. However, they lost early wickets, with the openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das departing quickly. The pressure was on, and the Bangladeshi team was in a challenging situation at 41-2.
This was when Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib al Hasan stepped up to the plate. Their partnership turned the match in Bangladesh’s favour. Shanto played a crucial knock, scoring 90 runs from 101 deliveries, displaying remarkable composure and skill. Shakib showcased exceptional form as well, contributing 82 runs from just 65 deliveries.
The duo’s partnership laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s successful chase, and they were able to secure the target with relative ease.
Despite losing a few wickets in the late stages of the game, Bangladesh reached the target with 282-7 in 41.1 overs. Although Dilshan Madushanka (3/69) and Angelo Mathews (2/39) fought hard for Sri Lanka, their efforts were not enough to defend the target.
