Azmatullah Omarzai takes Afghanistan to a competitive total
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan set a target of 245 runs for the Proteas. Afghanistan’s innings saw a commendable performance from Azmatullah Omarzai, who fell just short of a century with a brilliant 97 off 107 deliveries. However, the South African bowlers, led by Gerald Coetzee with a four-wicket haul, managed to restrict Afghanistan to a total of 244 runs in their allotted 50 overs.
Rassie van der Dussen guides South Africa home
Chasing the target, South Africa displayed a balanced batting effort, reaching 247/5 in 47.3 overs. Rassie van der Dussen played a crucial role with a composed 76 runs off 95 balls, guiding his team to a five-wicket victory. Other notable contributions came from Quinton de Kock (41) and Andile Phehlukwayo (39), ensuring South Africa secured the win with 15 balls to spare.

Despite Afghanistan’s bowlers putting up a fight, with Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan taking two wickets each, it was not enough to defend the modest total. Mujeeb Ur Rahman also chipped in with a wicket, but South Africa’s batting depth proved decisive.
In the end, South Africa’s well-rounded performance with both bat and ball secured a crucial win in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, maintaining their momentum in the tournament.
