India beat Sri Lanka in the first ODI
Team India defeated Sri Lanka in the opening One-Day International (ODI) of the ongoing three-match series at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Put into bat first, India’s top order came to the party as the hosts posted a humungous 373/7 on the board in their assigned 50 overs. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took the team off to a flyer and went on to form a remarkable 143-run partnership before superstar Virat Kohli took charge to bring up his 45th ODI century.

The former India skipper smashed 113 runs off just 87 deliveries, with the help of 12 fours and a six. Apart from Kohli, Rohit (83 off 67) and Shubman (70 off 60) made valuable contributions to the team’s total.

In response, the Islanders managed to reach 306/8, losing the contest by 67 runs. Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka led from the front but didn’t get enough support from other batters, except Pathum NIssanka, who scored 72 off 80 deliveries.

Shanaka, on the other hand, kept tickling the scoreboard and stayed until the end. The 31-year-old smashed a fighting century and remained unbeaten on 108 from 88 deliveries, laced up with 12 fours and three maximums. For the home team, Umran Malik picked up three wickets while conceding 57 runs in eight overs.
