England players celebrating Steve Smith's wicket
The first Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston has so far witnessed an intriguing battle between England and Australia. Although England faced some scrutiny after declaring their innings at 393/8 on Day 1, they managed to gain momentum with the ball and found themselves in a favourable position on Day 2 by picking a few early Australian wickets.

Stuart Broad came up with the first breakthrough for the English team as he first dismissed David Warner for nine runs in the 11th over and went on to trap Marnus Labuschagne for a golden duck on the very next ball. Two consecutive setbacks by Broad pushed the Aussie team on the back foot.

Steve Smith then batted resiliently alongside Travis Head and ensured that Australia didn’t lose any further wickets until he fell victim to England skipper Ben Stokes after facing 59 deliveries in the 27th over.

Just minutes before the lunch break, Stokes delivered a brilliant delivery that angled into Smith’s pads. Smith attempted to flick the ball towards square leg but failed to connect, playing all around it and getting trapped in front of the stumps. After some deliberation, the umpire raised his finger, adjudging Smith out.

Smith seemed surprised by the decision as he thought the ball hit him too high and eventually opted for a review. However, the replays confirmed that the ball had hit the stumps, leaving Smith with no choice but to make the long walk back to the pavilion. The dismissal of Smith was a significant moment in the match, and Stokes, along with his fellow England players, celebrated the wicket with elation.

It is worth mentioning that Smith’s wicket was a crucial one for England, provided the record the former has against the hosts. The right-handed Aussie batter has amassed 3060 runs against England in Tests comprising 11 centuries and as many fifties.
