Buttler tried his best to save the game for England, playing a spectacular rearguard inning of 26 but got out hit-wicket after facing 207 balls on the final day.
Buttler was facing a delivery by Aussie pacer Jhye Richardson when he accidentally trod on his own stumps.
“You couldn’t write a story like this, could you?. We were just saying he [Buttler] has been getting deep in his crease, and he has got deep in his crease, alright. He’s played back and taken off, and wow,” former Australia international Mark Waugh said on air during his commentary stint with Fox Sports.
“What a way to get out. It is a cruel way to get out. It is a cruel game sometimes cricket,” he added.
Buttler stitched a 61-run partnership for the seventh wicket with the more free-flowing Chris Woakes to keep England eyeing for a great escape. But all their hopes faded once Woakes was cleaned up by Richardson in the second session and dipped further when Ollie Robinson (8 off 39) fell off a Nathan Lyon delivery shortly before the tea break.
England were all-but eliminated when Buttler clipped the stumps with his foot.
Richardson was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, bagging 5/42 in the fourth innings.
