'We might have a problem': Aides scramble as Trump embraces QAnon at rallies and on Truth Social

One of the most unnerving scenes at Donald Trump’s MAGA rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Sept. 17, came when Trump closed his speech to the strains of what sounded like a QAnon song—with many in the crowd raising one finger to the sky. According to CNN, even some of Trump’s own aides realized “we might have a problem” when that happened.

Meanwhile, over on Trump’s Truth Social platform, a number of QAnon supporters figuratively danced jigs, believing it was proof that their messiah was embracing their cause.

And earlier this week, Trump gave QAnon devotees even more reason to celebrate—and fair-minded Americans more reason to be very concerned. According to Will Sommer of The Daily Beast, when a user on Trump’s social media platform shared a video full of QAnon tropes, Trump himself reposted the video.

On Friday, Sommer shared screenshots of the video on Twitter.

This new video might be the most red-pilled QAnon content Trump has ever posted, which is saying something. Filled with references to military tribunals, pedophiles, Satanists, and Punisher skulls. pic.twitter.com/fZ1iyRFMCg

Out of all the QAnon memes Trump posted last night, this might be the craziest. pic.twitter.com/jcdIrZRIJ2

Trump reposted the video on Thursday night after seeing a dual Trump-QAnon devotee on his platform share it earlier. What else was in that video he tacitly endorsed by sharing it? Sommer offers more:

Trump’s promotion of the meme video marks the latest step in his recent campaign promoting QAnon. The images feature QAnon slogans like “Where we go one, we go all,” and reference “The Storm” — the moment QAnon believers think Trump will imprison his enemies and usher in a sort of fascist utopia. Other pictures included an edited image of Trump holding a playing card with “Q” on it, and another featuring Trump promising to take on the “Satanists” and “pedos.”

The new video posted by Trump also included references to punishing “acts of treason” illustrated with the skull logo of vigilante superhero “The Punisher” — a favorite for QAnon believers — and a picture of a book on military criminal law, a reference to the QAnon idea that top Democrats and prominent celebrities will face military tribunals.

One picture shows an image of Trump protecting a wailing child, an apparent reference to the QAnon concept that Democrats sexually torture children and drink their blood.

The picture includes the hashtag “Save Our Children,” a reference to a QAnon offshoot movement from 2020.

This comes on the heels of Trump sharing an image of himself wearing a “Q” pin, along with the caption, “The Storm is Coming”—a reference to the moment Q adherents believe Trump will punish his enemies.

Needless to say, other QAnon followers on Truth Social were overjoyed. One claimed that this was hard evidence that “the Storm is coming.” Another claimed that the video was a golden opportunity to red-pill (convert) Trump supporters who don’t “trust the plan” just yet.

Yet a significant number of Trump’s own team members don’t “trust the plan,” if what happened at Trump’s Friday night rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, is any indication. Lisa Desjardins of PBS’ Newshour reported that a number of people raised their fingers in the air—only to yank them back down on orders from security.

The man in this photo held up 1 finger and told me he meant it as a WWG1WGA sign - and then the security guard in the next photo told him to take it down. He was furious “thats my Constitutional right!” the man in the crowd told me after I saw that interaction happen. pic.twitter.com/nAb6norcjT

Also, the company says it provides security. I’m not sure the word matters though - they were official staff at the event and clearly had been directed to watch for this kind of gesture and to shut it down. And they were dressed far more like security than, say, ushers.

On the face of it, this is yet another case where Trump’s own team can’t control him. But it’s even more frightening than that. In the face of declining popularity and legal troubles galore, the de facto leader of the Republican Party is openly embracing dangerous conspiracy theories that have led to numerous acts of violence, and was one of the contributing causes of a deadly insurrection.

Donald Trump and his MAGA allies came close to overthrowing our democracy on Jan. 6, and they will try again if they win in 2022. The best thing you can do is to help get out the Democratic vote for the midterms, and we need everyone to do what they can. Click here to find all the volunteer opportunities available.
