What does the Chauvin verdict mean for America?

We all breathed a sigh of relief when a Minnesota jury quickly rendered the right call in the murder trial of former policeman Derek Chauvin, a verdict that should never have been in doubt. But, you know: America. Yet that one victory just underscored what an anomaly it was.

Of the 7,666 police officers who killed people in the US between 2013 and 2019, just 25 were convicted. [...] In another 74 of those cases, officers were charged but not convicted. But in the vast majority of cases (99%), officers were not charged with any crime whatsoever.

And any notion that the trial would communicate to other police that maybe, just maybe, their days of impunity to violence and murder were numbered was quickly dashed by police killings in Ohio and North Carolina.

In today’s episode of The Brief, Daily Kos staff writer Lauren Floyd joins us to discuss her coverage of the Chauvin trial, and what the next steps should be to stamp out police brutality. Also joining us is Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party and key member of the Movement for Black Lives.

Join us today, live, at 1:30 PT/4:30 ET, for this important discussion.
