Will Young and Rachin Ravindra formed a promising second-wicket partnership, adding 79 runs. Young scored 54 runs and capitalized on a dropped catch.
All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai had an explosive start with the ball, taking two quick wickets in his first over dismissing Ravindra and Young in the 21st over. Rashid Khan removed Daryl Mitchell in the next over, leaving New Zealand at 110/4.
The Kiwi innings were then rebuilt by Glenn Phillips (71 off 80) and skipper Tom Latham (68 off 74), who batted sensibly and crafted a valuable 144-run partnership for the fifth wicket, providing stability and a competitive total of 288/6 in 50 overs.
