UP Warriorz (UPW) locked horns with Gujarat Giants (GG)) in match no. 17 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (March 20).

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Gujarat started well and put up a competitive total of 178/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Ashleigh Gardner top-scored for her team and smashed a brilliant 60 off 39 balls, including six fours and three sixes. Gardner was well supported by Dayalan Hemalatha (57). Meanwhile, Sophie Ecclestone and Parshavi Chopra picked up two wickets each for UP.

In reply, UPW lost some quick early wickets as three of their batters were sent back to the pavilion with just 39 on the board. However, Grace Harris played a magnificent 72-run knock for the UP-based team and helped her side regain momentum. Tahila McGarth also contributed a valuable 57 runs in the run chase. Despite Harris and Tahila’s quickfire knocks, the game turned out to be a thriller, and the result was decided in the last over. Ecclestone sealed the match for UP with three wickets remaining by hitting a four on the fifth ball of the 20th over. On the other hand, Kim Garth picked two scalps for Gujarat but unfortunately couldn’t help her team register a win.

Harris was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for her exceptional knock. Speaking about her match-winning inning in the post-match presentation, she said: “With short boundaries and a quick outfield, I knew we were always in the game. I was a bit scratchy at the start but I found my range later. I like to finish games.”

With the win, UPW became the third team after Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) to reach the WPL 2023 playoffs.

Came down to the last over and though she wasn't in it, Grace Harris made it possible. The most dangerous batter at the tail end of a match
