Young people are registering to vote in massive numbers post-Dobbs, but we're running out of time

We’re just six weeks away from the midterm elections, and we have seen a huge influx of young people registering to vote because they're angry about the Supreme Court’s destruction of abortion rights in June.

As Daily Kos’ Kerry Eleveld wrote this month:

Ideally, heading into the final stretch of a midterm election, a party settles on a unifying message on the top one or two issues driving the cycle. Take the issue of overturning abortion rights, which has sparked an unprecedented surge in registration among both women and, in some states, younger progressives of both sexes.

In Texas, for instance, the progressive data firm TargetSmart found that before the Dobbs ruling gutting Roe, Republicans held a 5-point advantage in voter registration. But after the ruling, Democrats held a 10-point advantage in new registrations 42% - 32%, as of earlier this month—a net swing of 15 points.

Exciting stuff. But in a lot of states, the the deadline to register to vote is coming fast. If we're going to defeat Republicans and save our democracy, we don't have much time left to get young people registered to vote. Now is the moment to devote our grassroots energy to riding this wave and getting results.

One of the most hopeful signs of victory is a huge surge of young voters. But with the deadline to register to vote coming up in many states, the time is now—not later in October—to get involved.

Click to volunteer on Wednesday for NextGen Phone-bank Day of Action! You’ll make calls to young people and help them through the process of registering to vote.

Can't phone-bank? Sign up for a text-banking shift this week and send text messages to young people in battleground states to help them register to vote.

In the aftermath of the Dobbs decision that overruled Roe v. Wade, Kansas saw a huge influx of young women (and men) registering to vote. And we are seeing this trend across the country.

NextGen America is the nation’s largest youth voter organization, mobilizing millions of young people each year to support progressive candidates up and down the ballot. This week, the effort is all about registering even more young voters. NextGen America recently mailed out voter registration applications to folks in battleground states who recently moved or turned 18. Now it's on all of us to follow up and help build a wave of new registered voters.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, we'll be calling those people who received a form from NextGen to help walk them through the voter registration process! All you need to join the effort is a reliable internet connection to make phone calls and help us reach 15,000 voters.

NextGen is also hosting text-banks every day this week to send text messages to young people in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Nevada, and Arizona—states that will decide which party controls the U.S. Senate in January. Again, you can do this from your home computer, and even in your pajamas.

The midterm elections are just six weeks from now. What you do now right now will determine if we have huge Democratic victories, or face a terrifying right-wing onslaught on our freedoms. If you’re pondering the best, most important way you can get involved, registering people to vote is what we need you to do this week.

Click to volunteer and phone-bank with NextGen on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
