Kansas Republican candidate Sawyer laughs at threats over LGBTQ issues

Something strange happened in Marion County, Kansas, at a recent Republican county party meeting. Strange as in this probably happens all the time, you just don’t hear about it. Katie Sawyer, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, addressed the audience and spoke forcefully about the dangers of transgender athletes in Kansas high school athletics. She didn’t provide any actual proof, but she did manage to scare a bunch of senior citizens, and the results were to be expected.

Speaking to the crowd, the grumble in the audience was clear: “I think she oughta change the lock on her office door,” referring to [curent Democratic Governor] Kelly. Another man chimed in, “If she was ever at the Capitol, we might.” Republicans worked hard to dismiss this, saying it meant something else entirely; however, the statement of “if she was ever at the capitol” is referring to something that can only happen in the current tense, so assuming they passed high school English, they probably should understand the threat to the sitting governor was immediate, not speaking about future elections. Speaking to the KC Star: “A candidate for what could be the highest office in the state thinks it’s funny to threaten the sitting governor — especially over the issue of LGBT equality? This isn’t funny,” said Tom Witt, executive director of Equality Kansas, the state’s leading LGBTQ rights organization.

Katie Sawyer is running for lieutenant governor—from behind a wall.

Sawyer, a former staffer to right-wing senator and congressman Roger Marshall—the same Roger Marshall who was okay with being one of the senators who opposed rejecting the electoral college after the Jan. 6 domestic terrorism attack—is running as an enigma in Kansas.

While she took time to laugh along at the joke regarding an assault to a sitting Kansas governor because of her support of trans rights, most Kansans have little opportunity to know much about the Republican candidate in any way. Her social media platforms are locked down to the public.

What we do know about Katie? She likes laughing at jokes about threats to a sitting elected officials; she makes up things about trans people to scare the elderly; and she really doesn’t want you to know much about her. Well, I guess she’s also okay with you knowing she’s a Diet Coke addict.
