The 30-year-old season cricketer had been playing with a meniscus tear in his right knee and faced discomfort while bowling against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 20 at the Perth Stadium. Subsequent scans confirmed the need for surgery, leading to his departure from the field midway through the game. Turner underwent a successful surgery on December 22 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Budding all-rounder takes the helm
In light of Turner’s absence, the Scorchers have appointed the talented all-rounder Aaron Hardie as their stand-in captain for the remaining matches of the T20 tournament. Notably, Hardie was not the vice-captain; that role was held by Josh Inglis. The decision to appoint Hardie was explained by the team’s coach, Adam Voges.
In an official statement, Voges stated, “Josh is excellent from a strategy point of view. But I guess there are limitations in what your keeper can do, particularly when the heat comes on. And if you’re a bit time-poor within your innings, which generally we are, then it’s really difficult to have those conversations and that connection with the bowling group.”

Coach’s insight on the decision
Voges emphasized the importance of effective communication with the bowlers, especially during critical moments in the game. The coach acknowledged that Inglis, being a wicketkeeper, might face challenges in maintaining close contact with the bowling group during high-pressure situations.
“If it had gone the other way we’d gone with Josh, we would have been confident in him as well,” Voges added.
Perth Scorchers gear up for Melbourne Renegades clash
The Scorchers, currently placed at the third spot in the points table with two wins from three games, are set to face the Melbourne Renegades in the 15th match of BBL|13 at their home ground on December 26. The team will be eager to maintain their momentum under the leadership of the newly appointed captain, Hardie.
